7 Key Benefits to Quitting!
How it Prevents Damage to your Heart & Circulation
Cigarette Smoking harms pretty much every part of your body. However, the primary concern that links to it harming other areas of your body is, it’s negative effect on your heart, circulation and blood vessels, your cardiovascular system.
When breathed in, the toxic mix of more than 7,000 chemicals1 in cigarette smoke interferes with important processes in your body that assist in it functioning optimally. One of these processes is the delivery of oxygen-rich blood to your heart and your entire body.
As you breathe, your lungs take in oxygen and deliver it to your heart, which pumps this oxygen-rich blood to the rest of your body through the blood vessels.
But when you breathe in cigarette smoke, the blood that is distributed to the rest of the body becomes contaminated with the chemicals in the smoke and the ingestion of these chemicals within your body. Research has found that these chemicals cause damage your heart and blood vessels, that in turn lead to cardiovascular disease (CVD)
What is Coronary Heart Disease?
Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the leading cause of depletion of health and death in Australia. The three major areas of CHD are Heart Attack, also known as (Acute Myocardial Infarction), Angina and Stroke. As you may know that a heart attack is a life-threatening event, and a stroke can also be life-threatening and debilitating.
The difference between angina and heart attack is that Angina occurs when your heart muscle does not get the blood supply and oxygen that it needs. The difference between angina and a heart attack is that angina attacks do not permanently damage the heart muscle.
A Heart Attack occurs when a blood vessel that supplies the heart is blocked completely, and your heart muscle can’t get enough oxygen. A common symptom of a heart attack is chest pain that may spread to your arms, neck, jaw or back. Heart attacks are mostly caused by coronary heart disease which starves your heart of oxygen.
A Stroke Occurs when the supply of blood to the brain is reduced or blocked completely, which prevents brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. It can be life threatening with brain damage and loss of use of limbs if medical treatment isn’t sought immediately.
Summary of Cardiovascular Disease CVD
- Coronary heart disease, or the narrowing of blood vessels carrying blood to the heart.
- Hypertension (high blood pressure).
- Heart attack.
- Aneurysms (a bulge or weakness in an artery).
- Peripheral artery disease
Cardiovascular Disease CVD is one of the most prevalent diseases in Australia. This means that on average, 118 Australians die from CVD each day, or one person every 12 minutes. The good news is that many of these heart risks can be reversed simply by quitting smoking.
7 Key Benefits to Quitting Smoking
& Preventing CVD!
The best way to safeguard your heart from smoking-related disease and death is to never start using cigarettes. But if you do smoke cigarettes, the earlier you can quit, the better. Quitting smoking benefits your heart and cardiovascular system now and in the future:
- Twenty minutes after you quit smoking, your heart rate drops.
- Just 12 hours after quitting smoking, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal, allowing more oxygen to vital organs like your heart.
- Within 2 weeks, exercise will be easier, without feeling short of breath.
- Over the next few months, you will be able to breathe deeply again. If you have been prone to a nasty, hacking cough, this can subside, in many cases will disappear completely over time. Taking great pressure off, of your lungs and your heart.
- When you quit, you’ll also protect your friends and family from the health risks of second-hand smoke.
- Combining the elements of becoming a non-smoker with a Healthier Eating Regime and Lifestyle you will be less likely to fall victim of cancer, as smoking is a major contributor in this area of disease.
- Within four years of quitting, your risk of stroke drops to that of lifetime non-smokers.
The secret to not putting on excess weight is not to replace your smoking with food. Many people swap food for smoking when they first quit, and this is what will put on the weight. You may find that you put on a kilo or two, this is due to a change in your Metabolism, but as you become more active and eat healthy foods, this will only be temporary. After a few months, you and your body will become accustomed to a smoke-free life, finding that regular exercise and by improving your diet, you will be happier and have more energy.
If you have heart disease, it’s not too late to make a difference. If you give up cigarettes after a heart attack, you can cut your risk of having a second one in half. Quitting after you have had bypass surgery can keep your arteries healthy and help prevent further clogs and disease.
